ECIO 2025 – Interventional oncology’s multidisciplinary global stage
The European Conference on Interventional Oncology has become the global home for all who specialise in minimally invasive cancer care. Based on our experience from past ECIO congresses and adding exciting new elements, the Scientific Programme Committee has put together a vibrant programme for our 2025 meeting. We are already excited about a new session format, new research, new connections, and a greater focus on multidisciplinary teamwork than ever before.
The founders of interventional oncology have worked tirelessly to gain a strong foothold in the greater pantheon of cancer care. As the dreams of our pioneers become reality and the fight for greater recognition is won in more centres every year, we can begin to turn our eyes and energies towards the future.
Many of the sessions at ECIO 2025 will cover both the vast changes that the specialty has undergone in recent years as well as the exciting possibilities that emerging research brings. A session called “HCC management from 2020 to 2025: the revolution in…” will highlight the changes that have occurred in epidemiology, resection and transplantation, ablation, radiation oncology, and more in recent years. As a follow-up, “HCC management from 2025 to 2030 – get ready for the beta generation” will offer a thrilling look into what could come next.
Continuing this focus on research and expanding our evidence base, the popular “Meet the PI” session will again take place, in which we will hear about the design and first results of new and upcoming trials. Sessions on current emerging hot topics, such as immuno-oncology, AI in IO, and the future of IO as a whole will also provide a great deal of food for thought.
Sessions looking at more established knowledge and practices will include clinical focus sessions on understanding the “oligo” patient, mastering the local treatment of MCC, IO management of osseus metastases, and much more.
The cooperation of our MDT colleagues from medical oncology, gastroenterology, hepatology, radiotherapy, and surgery, etc., is vital in ensuring that interventional oncology treatments are made available to all patients who can benefit from the advantages that they bring. Interventional oncologists must be included in the tumour board, and we must make our voices heard! With this in mind, ECIO 2025 will include several tumour board sessions, with topics covering MCC, renal cancer, HCC, and lung cancer. A session called “Ask me anything: decision making in the MDT” will also focus on this important topic.
ECIO 2025 will focus more strongly on multidisciplinary care than ever before. There has never been a better time to bring a colleague to the conference with you! The Collaborating Against Cancer Initiative will once again be offering free attendance and travel support to physicians from related specialities who wish to gain a greater understanding of all that IO can offer to patients.
ECIO welcomes practitioners at all levels of their careers. Junior attendees joining us in Rotterdam will learn a lot through dedicated basic courses focusing on breast, thyroid, and prostate cancer. New this year, a two-part series format called “How to perform a safe and effective procedure: a step-by-step approach” will also be of great interest to young IOs. These technical, didactic sessions will include information on patient selection, a demonstrative video with commentary, and take-home learning points.
Alongside the scientific programme, participants will be able to take advantage of numerous opportunities to gain tactile experience with the latest devices in IO treatments during the hands-on device training sessions. Trainings for multiple modalities of tumour ablation will be hosted, as well as sessions on MSK oncologic interventions and dosimetry and administration systems in radioembolization.
The vibrant port city of Rotterdam and our congress venue – the state-of-the-art Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre – will act as the backdrop for our meetings, exchanges, and catch-ups with colleagues and friends both old and new.
We look forward to welcoming you to ECIO 2025!
